IDIDIT 16" "Shorty" Steering Column
Steering column installation is a fairly simple concept. Typically, columns are installed with some sort of an under-dash mount, and a floor mount. The column extends through the firewall towards the gearbox using a combination of u-joints and shafts. As street rods progress into bigger engines, bigger seats, and inevitably bigger drivers, space is a valuable commodity. Big blocks and recessed firewalls along with custom built headers and motor mounts, stuffed into small engine compartments make steering column and shaft assemblies extremely custom.
One new concept we have been experimenting with is installing a much shorter column than traditionally was used. For example a 1932 Ford generally uses a 30” column shift column. We have used a 16" column shift column in the photos below. By using a "shorty" column we can gain space in many different ways.
